Atlanta United sign Peruvian center-back Luis Abram from Granada

Atlanta United have strengthened their defensive options with the signing of center-back Luis Abram from Spanish Segunda side Granada.

A 33-time Peru international, Abram has signed a four-year deal with the Five Stripes through the 2026 MLS season.

The 26-year-old arrives after Atlanta allowed both George Campbell and Alan Franco to leave the club for CF Montreal and Sao Paulo, respectively, meaning he’ll add some much-needed depth and quality at center-back alongside Juanjo Purata and Miles Robinson.

“Luis is a talented center-back who brings a lot of experience at both the club and international level at just 26 years old,” Atlanta United vice president and technical director Carlos Bocanegra said in a club press release. “We expect him to make an immediate impact on our backline and we’re excited to welcome him to the club.”

During his time with Granada, Abram enjoyed a loan spell at Liga MX side Cruz Azul, while he’s also played for Argentine giants Velez and Sporting Cristal in his homeland – winning two Peruvian Primera Division titles with the latter.

The Five Stripes are currently overhauling their roster after missing out on the MLS Cup Playoffs for the second time in three years in 2022. Abram is the second major arrival alongside former Columbus Crew forward Derrick Etienne Jr.

Atlanta United open the 2023 campaign at home to the San Jose Earthquakes on February 25.
