Lyon, chasing their eighth (8th) Champions League trophy in 11 seasons, gave Barcelona no hope in the final at the Allianz Arena in Turin, racing into a 3-0 lead within 33 minutes.
Helpless Oshoala, Barcelona Femeni in UWCL final against Lyon
The talisman of the Nigerian women’s senior team, Oshoala, could not get into the Starting XI for the showpiece event as Jennifer Hermoso was chosen to lead the line for the Barcelona Femeni team.
With the French giants racing into a three-goal lead by a little after the half-hour mark, the competition’s topscorer Alexia Putellas pulled a goal back for the Spanish side in the 41st minute.
This set the stage for Oshoala’s introduction as the 27-year-old striker came on in place of Hermoso after the halftime break.
Barcelona controlled possession in the second half but Oshoala had precious little to feed on, managing only one (1) shot off target and one (1) shot blocked in her 45 minutes on the pitch.
Oshoala had an excellent time linking up play in the attacking phases, recording an 87.5% pass accuracy, while delivering one (1) key pass, one (1) accurate cross and creating one (1) big chance.
The Nigerian international also remained her battling self, winning the two (2) ground duels she contested and also putting in one (1) tackle.
Oshoala played six (6) matches in total for Barcelona in the Women’s Champions League, bagging one (1) goal and one (1) assist in her appearances.
Lyon win 8th record UWCL title
Saturday’s Champions League triumph confirmed Lyon’s continued dominance of the Women’s game, being their 8th continental title in 11 seasons.
The French giants wrestled back the title from Barcelona who were 2021 winners, having broke Lyon’s five-year consecutive winning streak with a surprise triumph last season.
Lyon won an unprecedented five consecutive titles between 2016 and 2020 and they have now reasserted their dominance by picking up the 2022 winners medal.
Barcelona have now lost two UEFA Women’s Champions League finals to Lyon, with the 2019 final at the Groupama Arena in Budapest ending in a 4-1 defeat for the Blaugranes.
