Arsenal midfielder and Switzerland, Granit Xhaka, has vowed that his squad would not engage in any kind of protest against FIFA ruling prohibiting solidarity with the LBTQ community.
Naija News recalls that FIFA passed a ruling to forbid captains of the 32 teams at the World cup to put on the “OneLove” armband in Qatar.
According to previous reports, Qatar, which is the host of the 2022 World Cup, has come under fire for a number of reasons, including the shift of the tournament from its customary June date to November, the prohibition of public displays of love by homosexual couples, and the prohibition of beer in stadiums.
Switzerland, according to the Arsenal midfielder, will prioritise the reason they are in Qatar and adhere to the regulations.
According to Xhaka, he and his colleagues are not in Qatar to teach anybody a lesson.
FIFA’s strict position on forbidding players from donning OneLove armbands has drawn criticism from certain nations and support from others.
The Germans mounted an on-field protest against the choice just before their game against Japan on Wednesday by concealing their lips in the group shot.
When questioned about Germany’s complaint at Switzerland’s post-match news conference, the Arsenal midfielder said: “I don’t think we need to do anything as the Swiss team.
“We need to respect the rules and concentrate on our football, that’s all I intend to do.
“We’re here to play football and not hand out lessons to anyone.”
