Antonio Conte reveals fears he has ‘failed’ as Tottenham manager

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte has confessed he sometimes believes he has been a failure at the club.

The Italian joined Spurs in November 2021 in the hope of ending the club’s long wait for a trophy, but despite an encouraging end to his debut season, Conte finds himself in the midst of real uncertainty this time around.

Spurs do sit inside the top four, albeit having played more games than the teams around them, but concerns over the team’s consistency and ability to win big games have mounted following their recent elimination from the Champions League.

While Conte acknowledged there have been positive changes since he took over, he conceded that all has not gone to plan.

“After a year and half we improved many aspects but sometimes during this path I think we’ve failed,” Conte said. “We failed because we weren’t ready to face the right pressure and stress.

“I understand the fans are frustrated because this season wasn’t good to lift a trophy but I can tell them we are working very hard to make them proud and to try to be ready to lift trophies.

“During your career, failure is part of the job. The most important thing is to work hard to try and avoid failure. Sometimes failure pushes you to become stronger and make yourself better.

“For the big coaches, the expectation is to lift a trophy: it’s the same for me here, and if we don’t lift a trophy the first responsibility falls on the coach. I know the expectations of myself are really high.”

Conte’s contract with Spurs expires at the end of the season, and although the club have the option to extend his stay by a further 12 months, 90min understands Conte is set to depart in the summer.
