The suspended Transition Committee Chairman of Nnewi North Local Government Area, Mbazulike Illoka, whose wife, Chidibere died under questionable circumstances has been arrested by the Anambra state Police Command.
According to The Punch, the chairman is detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Awka, Anambra state.
This is coming, days after Illoka was suspended by the state government to give room for an unbiased investigation into the matter.
Confirming the reports, the Anambra state police spokesperson, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, said an autopsy would be conducted to establish the cause of the wife’s death.
“He is in our custody now and we urge the members of the public to be patient as the autopsy shall prove the cause of the wife’s death. Meanwhile, investigation is still ongoing please” Ikenga added
“His arrest was consequent upon a petition by the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) on Monday, August 15, and addressed to the inspector-General of Police Usman Alkali Baba at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters.”
HURIWA reportedly dragged the suspended council boss who is now charged of culpable homicide to IGP Baba over issues bordering on domestic violence.
Iloka had claimed that the deceased slumped and died while serving him food.
However, signs of violence were also found on her body with a huge wound plastered to her head, aroused suspicion leading to public outcry over her death.
