Alphonso Davies reacts to penalty miss in CanMNT loss to Belgium

Alphonso Davies has taken to social media to offer his thoughts on the Canadian Men’s National Team’s 1-0 loss to Belgium in their Group F opener.

Playing in their first World Cup match since 1986, the Canadians pushed Belgium all the way, dominating 22-9 on shots, 2.63-0.77 on Expected Goals, and 3-1 on big chances.

Davies had the chance to put the Canadians ahead in the 11th minute from the penalty spot, with what would have been his nation’s first-ever World Cup goal. However, a weak effort was easily saved by Thibaut Courtois and from there, try as they might, Canada just couldn’t find the finishing touch.

Belgium punished Canada right before halftime with Michy Batshuayi scoring what proved to be the winning goal.

In Davies’ own words, a ‘disappointing’ results, but one they must recover from quickly ahead of facing Croatia on Sunday.

“A disappointing result against a top team in the World Cup. We got two more games to go, we go again on Sunday!” the Bayern Munich star wrote on Twitter. “Thank you to all the fans for their support.”

Despite the defeat and his personal disappointment, Davies was still able to savor what was a historic moment in Canadian soccer.

“It feels good,” he said after the match (via TSN). “Stepping out on the pitch today was a dream come true for everyone in this white shirt. Playing Belgium, it wasn’t easy and we took the fight to them. We knew we had to show our quality today and that’s what we did.”
